Embroidery kits for beginners
Would you like to learn embroidery and are you looking for an embroidery kit suitable for beginners? A complete embroidery kit contains the most important materials you need to start your first project. However, not every kit is equally easy. The size, number of colours, technique used and the way the pattern is followed all influence the level of difficulty.
On this page, we explain what to look for when choosing your first embroidery kit. This allows you to start with a clear and manageable project that suits your level of experience.

Which embroidery kit is suitable for a beginner?
For your first embroidery project, it is best to choose a clear design with easily recognisable colour areas and a limited number of colours. A small or medium-sized project usually gives you a visible result more quickly than a very large and highly detailed design.
When choosing a kit, pay particular attention to the following:
- a clear and easy-to-read pattern;
- a manageable number of colours;
- sufficiently large and recognisable colour areas;
- not too many small details or scattered stitches;
- clear instructions;
- a complete kit containing the required materials;
- a size that is realistic for a first project.
A small embroidery kit is not automatically easy. A small design with many colours, tiny details and scattered stitches can be more difficult than a larger design with clearly defined colour areas.
Pre-printed embroidery kit or counted cross stitch?
With a pre-printed embroidery kit, the design is printed directly onto the Aida fabric. You can therefore see on the fabric where the different cross stitches need to be worked. For many beginners, this is the easiest way to start cross stitch.
With a counted cross-stitch kit, the design is shown on a paper chart. You count the squares on the chart to place each cross stitch in the correct position on the Aida fabric. This method requires a little more concentration and accurate counting.
Both types of kits can be suitable for beginners. Someone who has never embroidered before or who finds it difficult to follow a counted chart will usually find it easier to start with a pre-printed embroidery kit.

What is Aida fabric?
Aida is an embroidery fabric specially designed for cross stitch. Its regular structure forms clearly visible squares. Normally, one cross stitch is worked in each square of the design.
This even structure makes it easy to see where the needle should be inserted. Aida fabric is therefore particularly suitable for beginners.
Aida is available in different counts. The finer the fabric, the smaller the squares and the more detailed the finished embroidery will be. For a first project, Aida fabric with clearly visible squares is usually easier to use.
What is included in a complete embroidery kit?
The exact contents may differ depending on the brand and design. A complete cross-stitch kit usually contains:
- Aida fabric;
- the required embroidery threads;
- an embroidery needle;
- a chart or pre-printed design;
- instructions and a key explaining the colours and symbols.
Always check the product description before ordering. It will state which materials are included and whether any additional accessories are required.
An embroidery frame, for example, is not always included. It can nevertheless make embroidery easier by keeping the Aida fabric evenly tensioned while you work.
Are Brodeja embroidery kits suitable for beginners?
Brodeja embroidery kits are pre-printed directly onto Aida fabric. The design is therefore visible on the fabric and can be followed square by square without having to transfer the complete design from a paper chart.
The colours printed on the fabric deliberately contrast with the actual embroidery thread colours. This makes it easy to see which areas have already been stitched and which squares still need to be completed.
Horizontal and vertical guide lines are also printed on the Aida fabric. This grid divides the design into clear sections and corresponds to the paper chart supplied with the kit.
A Brodeja embroidery kit contains:
- pre-printed Aida fabric;
- the required embroidery threads;
- an embroidery needle;
- a paper chart;
- the necessary instructions.
The level of difficulty still depends on the chosen design. A large embroidery project with many colours and details requires more time and concentration than a smaller design with clearly defined colour areas.

How is the print removed from the fabric?
On Brodeja embroidery kits, the printed ink and guide lines are water-soluble. They are removed only after the entire embroidery has been completed.
Once the full design has been stitched, place the fabric in cold or lukewarm water below 30 °C for at least three hours. The printed ink will dissolve while soaking. Afterwards, rinse the fabric carefully once more with clean water.
Do not wash or dampen the pre-printed Aida fabric before the embroidery is completely finished. The print must remain visible while you are working so that the design can be followed correctly.
How do you start your first embroidery kit?
- Read all the instructions first.
- Study the chart and the colour key carefully.
- Check which thread colours correspond to the symbols or printed colour areas.
- Use the number of thread strands stated in the instructions.
- Work all cross stitches in the same direction.
- Do not pull the thread too tightly.
- Regularly check that you are still working in the correct part of the design.
With a traditional counted chart, you usually begin in the centre of the design and the fabric. With a pre-printed kit, you can often start with an easily recognisable colour area, unless the instructions recommend another method.
How many strands of embroidery thread should you use?
Embroidery thread usually consists of several separate strands. Two strands are often used for cross stitch, but the correct number can vary according to the kit, the Aida fabric and the desired result.
Always follow the instructions supplied with the kit. Do not automatically use the full, unsplit length of embroidery thread. Too many strands can make the cross stitches too thick and make it more difficult to pass the needle through the Aida fabric.
Do you need an embroidery frame?
An embroidery frame is not essential, but it can make embroidery easier for beginners. It keeps the Aida fabric evenly tensioned, making the squares easier to see and helping you create more regular stitches.
For pre-printed Aida fabric, it is best to use a square or rectangular embroidery frame. Do not use a round or oval hoop on the printed area. The pressure from the curved edges could damage or prematurely remove the water-soluble ink.
Tension the fabric evenly without distorting it. Where possible, keep the clamping points outside the printed area.
Common mistakes in a first embroidery project
- Starting without first reading the chart, key and instructions.
- Using the wrong number of thread strands.
- Working cross stitches in different directions.
- Pulling the thread too tightly and distorting the fabric.
- Using thread lengths that are too long and become tangled more easily.
- Failing to regularly check the number of squares when following a counted chart.
- Choosing a very large or highly detailed design as a first project.
- Dampening pre-printed Aida fabric before the embroidery is completely finished.
Take your time and check your work regularly. In embroidery, a neat and even result is more important than speed.

Frequently asked questions
Which embroidery kit is easiest for a beginner?
For many beginners, a pre-printed cross-stitch kit on Aida fabric is the easiest option. Choose a clear design with easily recognisable colour areas and a limited number of colours.
Do you still need to count with a pre-printed embroidery kit?
Because the design is printed directly onto the Aida fabric, you need to count much less than with a traditional chart. You still work square by square and check the colours using the key and the supplied chart.
Is a small embroidery kit always easier?
No. A small design can still be difficult when it contains many colours, tiny details or numerous scattered stitches. The clarity of the design is at least as important as its size.
Are all the required materials included?
The main materials are included in a complete embroidery kit. The exact contents may vary according to the brand and design. Always read the product description before ordering.
Can you start cross stitch without any experience?
Yes. Cross stitch is an accessible embroidery technique in which the stitches follow the squares of the Aida fabric. With a clear pattern, understandable instructions and a suitable embroidery kit, you can begin without any previous experience.
Are all Brodeja embroidery kits easy?
The pre-printed design makes the embroidery easier to follow, but not every model has the same level of difficulty. As a beginner, choose a manageable size with clear colour areas and only a limited number of small details.
